Basketball

GENERAL INFORMATION

Silverspring Youth Basketball functions in partnership with the Saskatoon Minor Basketball Association (SMBA) which includes the various communities throughout Saskatoon and surrounding area, running during the months of October through March.

Team practices are normally held weekday nights at either Mother Teresa or Silverspring elementary schools, with games held Saturdays in elementary and high school gyms around the city.

Silverspring Youth Basketball operates with the ideal that first and foremost the child should desire to play the sport of basketball to the best of their ability. Satisfaction derived from mastering complex motor skills, combined with the thrill of intense competition will result in full enjoyment of this fine game. Rules, fundamental movements, sportsmanship and co-operative team play will be heavily emphasized in all related activities. Additionally, Parents, Spectators, Players and Coaches are expected to comply with the fair play code of conduct as adopted by the SMBA.

Silverspring Youth Basketball relies on parents and other caregivers not only for support of their player, but also for support in team activities such as: timekeeping/scorekeeping, team management and coaching duties. Without volunteers in these areas, we simply cannot provide the option to play. Please help ensure the sport of basketball stays strong in our community, and consider which roles you will perform upon registration.

Please contact your Silverspring Basketball Coordinator with questions/concerns: Brian Webb at basketball@silverspringcommunity.ca

SILVERSPRING MINOR BASKETBALL INFORMATION AND EXPECTATIONS

  1. Indoor Season “On-line” registration will begin on Monday, August 20th to Monday, September 10th, 2018. There will no “In Person” registration this season as a result of low turn out in the past. If you prefer to make payment by cash or cheque please contact our Basketball Coordinator, Brian Webb at basketball@silverspringcommunity.ca Late Registrations will ONLY be accepted if there are teams in Silverspring needing players.

  2. We cannot run our program without volunteer coaches. The SMBA provides a coaching clinic for all new coaches. SMBA

  3. Practices will be held at least one night a week in the community, and may occur any night of the week. Some coaches may require more than one practice a week depending their schedule, available gym time and team goals. Proper basketball shoes (supportive & non-marking) and appropriate gym clothes (t-shirt & knee-length shorts) are a must.

  4. Games will be held Saturdays any time from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be held in school gyms city-wide. The game schedule will be posted on the SMBA website. All parents are expected to take turns with scorekeeping duties as required.

  5. Parents, Spectators, Players and Coaches are required to comply with the fair play code of conduct as adopted by the SMBA. This can be viewed on the website at SMBA.

  6. If you are registering an older player, be aware that due to factors like low numbers of children playing in the age group and lack of volunteer coaching staff, they may be transferred to the nearest adjoining community or zone that has a team. This is especially likely in Midget and higher levels. As a rule teams are based in communities where volunteers offer to coach.

  7. SMBA basketball is not tiered. Therefore, players must realize that not all team members will be starting at the same skill level so patience and positive peer attitudes are required to build strong team morale. The focus at this level will be on good sportsmanship, correct fundamentals and enjoyment of the game.

  8. Saskatoon Minor Basketball has decided to handle the Fall basketball jerseys in the same manner in which they handle them for their Spring league. The Silverspring Community Association will no longer provide jerseys. Registrants will be required to purchase their own jersey. The online link for ordering your child’s jersey through Al Anderson’s is:  https://smbagear.itemorder.com/sale  Please note the deadline is September 25th. Al Anderson's will have samples at their store for you to go in and try at your convenience. The payment for the jersey is separate from the registration fee.

All coaches are volunteers and without them we have no program, so please consider helping out!
